Overview

In November 2024, the Couse-Sharp Historic Site is announced the acquisition of a rare and historically significant painting: the only known self-portrait by Catharine Critcher, the celebrated American artist and the sole female member of the famed Taos Society of Artists (TSA).

Painted circa 1900, this rare and evocative piece offers an intimate glimpse into the strength and determination that defined Critcher’s remarkable career as a portraitist, educator, and the only female member of the prestigious Taos Society of Artists (TSA). The portrait will become part of the permanent collection and enhance the Site’s mission to preserve and share the legacy of Taos art and culture

This exhibition provides a deeper exploration of Critcher’s legacy, from her early training at the Académie Julian in Paris to her groundbreaking work in Taos, New Mexico. As a member of the TSA, Critcher broke barriers in the male-dominated art world, creating authentic and dignified portrayals of the Pueblo and Spanish communities that eschewed romanticized Western tropes.

Join us as we celebrate Catharine Carter Critcher’s artistry and her enduring contributions to American art.
