Edna Romero is a member of the Naranjo family, a family of extremely talented artists; however, Romero did not begin her artistic career until she retired. “It is an ability that you discover in yourself. I really never intended to make pottery. I see it in my family, it’s been generational, so I began to hone my own skills.” The first time Romero entered one of her pieces into the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts competition at Indian Market, she won first place in her division.

Romero is from Santa Clara Pueblo and married into Taos Pueblo. She explained that “I sometimes use a stone polish, the way Santa Clara people make the black-on-red pottery. People here in Taos use cloth polish, closer to its natural form.” The bean pot Romero made for this show is done in a Taos style of pottery using micaceous clay. Romero said, “My pottery is like a finger print. It is a part of me, and I want people to enjoy it.”
